2-Day Fundamentals Course

This two-day instructor led course has been designed to introduce the concepts of Project Management to help ensure a common understanding – regardless of whether you are a project manager, sponsor, team member or coordinator. The course covers the unique language, principles and tools of project management and builds a case for their application back at the workplace. This course will ensure you are equipped to manage your projects efficiently and successfully.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the 2-day course, you will:

  • Have a common understanding of what a project is and how it is different from day-to-day, business as usual work
  • Understand key terminology, principles and tools related to project management including how adaptive (Agile) and predictive (Waterfall) methodologies are different and how they work together
  • Understand the difference between project objectives, outputs, and outcomes
  • Learn and practice how to plan a project, based an output planning approach utilising Output Breakdown Structures, Output Flow Diagrams
  • Learn how to produce a project schedule including various estimation techniques
  • Gain practical techniques related to time, scope, cost, and quality
  • Learn practical techniques related to resourcing and costing on projects
  • Understand the importance of project quality and how to plan for it
  • Understand your role in a project and learn tips and techniques to help you manage your time and priorities
  • Understand a typical project organisation and the roles and responsibilities for each member of the Project Team and Project Steering Committee
  • Learn about the importance of stakeholders and how to use a stakeholder analysis to produce a robust Communications & Engagement Plan
  • Gain awareness of Risk Management including the difference between risks and issues
  • Have a general understanding of benefits, their importance to projects, and how to identify and quantify them
  • Talk through lots of real-life project examples to cement the learnings and identify traps to avoid.
  • Have a general understanding of the differences between project, programme, and portfolio management

 

PM101 (Project Management 101) Details

This session is a mixture of theory and discussion and practical group-based learning involving post-it notes, markers, flip chart paper. An easy to understand and practical case study is used throughout the course. No laptops are required, all learning resources are supplied.

Ideal for individuals who have no previous experience with project management, or those looking for a refresher. Also ideal for those wishing to develop an understanding of project management as they progress into Project Administration and/or Project Coordination.

No prerequisite is required for attendance on this session, but any prior experience or knowledge of project management will be a definite advantage

2 days (14 hours) – Typically 8:45 am for an 9 am start and a 4:30 pm finish with 1 hour for lunch and short morning and afternoon tea breaks.
